Letter from Dr. Robin Reed

(— and an ask before July 30)

Dear Family and Friends of Community Conversations: Sister to Sister, Inc.,

It has been more than 10 years since I first accepted the invitation to join a panel discussion with two other Community Conversations: Sister to Sister faculty members. I understood that even as a physician my health outcomes were not going to be the same as those who are not "of color." I love this model of discussing health care, self-care, and community support of wellness for women who look like me because it was a real dialogue.

I became a fast fan and stayed connected in as many ways as possible including becoming a board member, and most recently the Treasurer. Why? Because I heard the stories my sisters shared about changing their diet, about walking daily when they never liked walking, about speaking up with to her provider who could not hear her, about seeking mental health for grief when those around her considered it taboo, and after getting that help being able to become an advocate for others experiencing domestic violence. Community Conversations made a difference for many and will continue to provide both small and large impacts for many more than we can ever know.

It is in my latest role, as Treasurer, that I have felt the need to do even more. I have watched the struggle to fundraise directly from donors, from grants and from local community foundations. The shrinking funding under the current U.S. leadership has made it harder than ever. But we are strong and united as Black Women; we always find a way.

So, as I step down from this current term as Treasurer, I am asking you directly to help me help our nonprofit. It is our organization. It serves us and our sisters. Help us to thrive!
